The art of Odissi

Odissi is a Indian classical dance form that originated in the state of Odisha in India, and is believed to be the oldest of the surviving Indian classical dances. Odissi is distinguished by graceful postures, complex hand gestures, and rhythmic footwork.

Behind Nritya Kalashetra Company

President Subarna Guha's dance journey started under the guidance of Guru Nityanand Senapati under whom she learned Odissi for 11 years. As she and her young family moved first to Germany and then to the USA, Odissi took a backseat for a few years. Art though continued to be an integral part of her life as she choreographed and taught children in the community folk and fusion dances.

In 2017, she restarted her Odissi dance journey under the mentorship of her Guru Dr. Smt Aparuapa Chaterjee of the SRJAN repertory. Telling the stories of God and Goddess through this art form allows her to showcase cultural nuances to a wide variety of audiences.

She seeks to be an ambassador for the Odissi dance and persevering to bring this elegant dance form to a wider audience here, in the Treasure Valley and thus founded Nritya Kalashetra Company in 2024 to introduce, promote, and enhance awareness of the various performing arts of South Asia through teaching, concerts, recitals, lecture-demonstrations and creative collaborations.
